Kap: Natural Color Fawn, Merino Lamb’s wool $32/4-ounce ball
Kap: Natural Color Fawn, Merino Lamb’s wool $32/4-ounce ball
SOLD OUT: This is super-fine lamb’s wool is sold in four ounce balls or braids. This is a soft fawn color. It’s a favorite for needle felters and wet felters. Merino Kap is usually combed Top, but mills in the USA prefer fibers 3 inches or longer (predominantly catering to spinners) as there tends to be a lot of waste with the shorter fibers, thus a higher cost to process. For Kap, you want short fibers. Lamb’s wool is the first year’s growth. It’s naturally softer (the milk fleece), but shorter because our lambs are born in May and June and shorn the next year in March.
I decided to go the roving and not Top rout this year, to make the cost more reasonable. If you’re an expert spinner and can handle a short draw (or draught), similar to cashmere and cotton, then give this luxurious roving a try. You won’t be disappointed.
This is not combed top, so like all fine fiber, there will be noils in your finished yarn. Don’t let noils discourage you. Get yourself a sweater comb (we sell them… it’s like volcanic rock) and use it when needed. Combing does not compromise the integrity of your finished product.
One four-ounce ball spun into yarn will make a hat, or fingerless gloves.
Two four-ounce balls will make a nice pair of knee-high socks, or an infinity cowl.
To spin enough yarn for an adult woman’s sweater, with no cables (a basic raglan), you will need two pounds of roving (8 four-ounce balls)
Once spun into yarn, you can dye it any color you choose.
